Yancheng in Focus

Yancheng is a city with a long history and a profound culture. Located on the coast of the Yellow Sea and at the north wing of the Yangtze River Delta, Yancheng has a history of more than 2,100 years. As the only Chinese prefecture-level city named after "Yan (salt)", the sea salt culture has become the root of Yancheng culture. Yancheng used to be a red sacred place as was Yan'an in northern Shaanxi. It was the political, military, and cultural center of the anti-Japanese base behind the enemy lines in central China. Yancheng has produced outstanding personages, including Chen Lin, Lu Xiufu, and Shi Naian in ancient times as well as Hu Qiaomu, Qiao Guanhua, and Wang Ganjun in modern times.

Yancheng is a city with unique ecology and rich resources. With an area of 17,000 square kilometers and a registered population of 8.16 million, Yancheng is the largest city in Jiangsu province in terms of land area and the second largest in terms of population size. The city is home to red-crowned cranes and elk. Two national nature reserves - one for elk and the other for red-crowned cranes - have been built on coastal shoals. With cranes dancing and elk singing, the vast expanse of wetlands and shoals are good places for urban residents to return to nature and get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Yancheng has the longest coastline, the largest coastal shoals, and the broadest sea area in Jiangsu. The coastal shoals occupy 455,300 hectares, accounting for 70% of the province's total. With the shoal area still extending to the sea at a speed of over 1,300 hectares per year, Yancheng has become the country's important reserve land resource development zone. The potential for Yancheng's coastal development is huge.

Yancheng is a thriving and fast-growing city. Over the past 30 years, great changes have taken place in Yancheng's economic construction, social development, and urban landscape. Especially in recent years, Yancheng has been in the front row among cities in Jiangsu in terms of growth of major economic indicators. By the end of 2012, the city's regional GDP had reached RMB 312 billion, ranking 24th among all prefecture-level cities in China. The city is seeing accelerated new-type industrialization and urbanization. The city's pillar industries, such as automobile, textile, and machinery, have grown bigger and stronger. The emerging industries, such as wind power, photoelectricity, energy conservation, environmental protection, new energy vehicles, and marine biology, have risen rapidly. Yancheng is striving to build a well-off society in an all-around way and achieve new leap-forward development.

Yancheng is an open, inclusive, and vibrant city. Since being approved by the State Council as a coastal open city in 1988, Yancheng has established trade relationships with more than 140 countries and regions. More than 1,700 overseas companies have invested in Yancheng. Yancheng has two Class-1 open ports—Nanyang International Airport and Dafeng Port. Nanyang International Airport has opened international routes to Seoul, Hong Kong, and Taipei as well as flights to 18 Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. Dafeng Port has opened many overseas liner routes, including routes to Taiwan's Keelung, Japan's Moji, and South Korea's Incheon. Yancheng has been fully integrated into Shanghai's two-hour economic circle. With the ever-increasing resources of talented people, logistics, capital, technologies, and information, Yancheng is full of vitality.
